OpenTopography, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded data facility operated collaboratively between the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at University of California San Diego, EarthScope Consortium, and Arizona State University (ASU), has been selected to receive the inaugural Open Science Recognition Prize from the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
Open Science, according to UNESCO, is “an inclusive construct that combines various movements and practices aiming to make multilingual scientific knowledge openly available, accessible and reusable for everyone, to increase scientific... more
OpenTopography has expanded its API-accessible datasets to now include the U.S. Geological Survey's 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) digital elevation models (DEMs) at 1 arc-second (~30m), 1/3 arc-second (~10m), and 1m spatial resolution. The USGS 3DEP rasters are the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS, and cover the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and the island territories. Each DEM dataset is identified by its horizontal resolution and is produced to a consistent set of specifications. The elevations in these DEMs represent the topographic bare-... more
Access lidar via an OT+ subscription (for non-academic users).
This subscription provides access to lidar topography covering most of the US mainland, Hawaii, and territories as well as satellite data over the Arctic and Antarctic. This includes access to the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) and NOAA Coastal Lidar.
ArcticDEM and the Reference Elevation Model of Antarctica (REMA) are now accessible via OpenTopography with our value-added tools for access, processing, and visualization. The 32m and 10m resolution data products are open to all users, while processing and visualization of the 2m... more
OpenTopography has recently added a new structure from motion (SfM) dataset over Mount Rainier in Washington State. This dataset was collected by the National Park Service Mount Rainier (MORA) Geology Division in cooperation with the Alaska Region Office (AKRO) in September 2021. This dataset provides a unique, high-resolution survey of the geology, glaciology and overall topography of Mt Rainier and its surrounding areas. Both the digital surface model and component orthophotos are available through OpenTopography.

In response to The Great Vermont Flood of 10-11 July 2023, and recent devastating wildfires on Maui, HI, OpenTopography is temporarily removing our academic user restriction on our value-added services applied to open USGS 3D Elevation Project (3DEP) and NOAA Coastal lidar datasets for the state of Vermont and the island of Maui. We hope that OpenTopography's easy to use interface for accessing, processing, and visualizing high resolution lidar datasets in these affected regions will help to support recovery and rebuilding, assessment of environmental impacts, and research.

Pima Association of Governments (PAG) has partnered with OpenTopography to make the most recent high-quality USGS 3DEP light detection and ranging (lidar) dataset over Pima County, Arizona “open access” via OpenTopography - an online, public, geospatial data portal. Lidar is a remote sensing method used to create high resolution three-dimensional representations of the Earth's surface, including buildings, streets, vegetation, and the ground.
OpenTopography provides a one-stop solution for hosting and publicly distributing topography data. The website includes easy-to-use tools such as... more
The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar to work with the US Geological Survey’s Powell Center group on National Topographic Change.
The Powell Center group on National Topographic Change envisions developing a conceptual model for “A National Topographic Change Mapping and Monitoring System” that would enable nationwide assessment of multi-scale 3D changes of the Earth’s surface. The three-dimensional (3D) shape of the Earth is constantly in flux reflecting a variety of processes such as tectonic... more
OpenTopography has recently added three new datasets over New Zealand that collectively cover almost 12,000 km 2. The datasets cover the Southeast coast and the Tasman and Nelson regions of the South Island, as well as the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island. These datasets are available through an ongoing collaboration between OpenTopography and LINZ that makes OpenTopography the primary distribution platform for point cloud data collected as part of the LINZ national elevation program.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Level 3 gridded mean ground elevation and mean canopy height are now available through OpenTopography. These products are a subset of the level 3 gridded land surface metrics that are available from the NASA ORNL DAAC. The GEDI instrument is onboard the International Space Station, resulting in data coverage from -52 to 52 degrees latitude. This provides a unique, nearly global, canopy height dataset which is critical to studies on canopy vertical structure, carbon and water cycling, biodiversity and habitat, and much more (see GEDI... more
OpenTopography will be hiring at least one Data Science intern this summer via the EarthScope Student Careers Internship Program (formerly known as USIP). The intern(s) will work with the OpenTopography team to develop workflows and services related to processing, analysis, and/or visualization of topographic data managed by OpenTopography (https://opentopography.org/). These include lidar, photogrammetry, and radar data in point cloud and raster formats. Interns will be an integral member of the OpenTopography team, working closely with OpenTopography staff at EarthScope, San Diego... more
