Remote Exercise on Folds Near The San Andreas Fault

Given the necessity for online and remote learning on account of the coronavirus pandemic, we have designed an exercise for structural geology classes where students learn about the classical Painted Canyon site near the Southern San Andreas Fault, California, by analyzing a point cloud of a fold located near the fault. This activity is designed to serve as an alternative to typical field activities with a structural geology emphasis.

USGS 3DEP Data Now Available in OpenTopography Pilot

This subscription provides access to lidar topography covering most of the US mainland, Hawaii, and territories as well as satellite data over the Arctic and Antarctic. This includes access to the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) and NOAA Coastal Lidar.

New lidar datasets available: Kern Canyon and Lake Isabella, CA

OpenTopography is pleased to announce the release of a new lidar dataset covering about 439 km² along Kern Canyon, CA. The dataset was collected in 2008 for the Army Corps of Engineers and was used to identify late Quaternary deformation, and other seismogenic processes that are occurring in this region of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. These data were also used for analysis and mapping of floodplains along the Kern River.

The booth is shared with the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM). Our booth is staffed by the OpenTopography team and community members, and is a great chance to ask questions, provide feedback, or to discuss lidar, high resolution topography, and cyberinfrastructure.
