Summer 2021 Intern Opportunity: OpenTopography Data Technician

OpenTopography is seeking to hire a summer intern through the UNAVCO Student Internship Program (USIP)!

The OpenTopography Data Technician intern will support data operations, including workflows related to the ingestion of new topographic datasets into the OT system. Tasks will include data and metadata QA/QC, data loading, website landing page development, metadata enhancements, and potentially development of new tools or services for topographic data. The intern will learn about the OpenTopography cyberinfrastructure system and will work closely with both the OT team at UNAVCO as well as software engineering colleagues at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The intern position will focus on data collected with technologies such as airborne lidar, UAS structure from motion photogrammetry, and space-based imaging systems. We seek highly motivated students with a passion for topographic data and the science, education, and broader impacts that open data can enable. Position Overview:

  • This position is full-time, non-exempt position beginning May 17th or May 24th for 11 weeks.
  • A weekly stipend of $680-$760 (rate depends on skills and experience) for 11 weeks.
  • UNAVCO aims to conduct internships in person, in Boulder, Colorado. Should the situation change in terms of health and safety of participants and program staff we will convert all programming to a remote model. We will make any such decision on or before March 1, 2021.

Details:

  • Applications are encouraged from upper level undergraduate and graduate students in earth sciences, computer science, geography, engineering, or related field.
  • Familiarity with lidar & photogrammetry data and related software packages such as PDAL, GDAL, LAStools, QGIS, ArcGIS, and Global Mapper are preferred.
  • Familiarity with Python, SQL, web services (RESTful and/or OGC: WFS, WMS, WCS ), and cloud-native formats such as COGs would also be preferred.
