OpenTopography summer 2024 data science internship opportunity
OpenTopography is recruiting at least one Data Science intern this summer via the EarthScope Student Careers Internship Program. The intern(s) will work with the OpenTopography team to ingest and process data, and/or to develop workflows and services related to processing, analysis, and visualization of topographic data managed by OpenTopography (https://opentopography.org/). These include lidar, photogrammetry, and radar data in point cloud and raster formats. The intern will construct workflows, author documentation, and deploy the workflows as notebooks. In addition, the intern may work to catalog, quality control, and ingest new datasets into the OpenTopography system. The project will rely on resources such as GitHub, Jupyter Notebooks, Python, and open source geospatial software (e.g., PDAL and GDAL). Additional potential tasks, as a function of the intern’s skills and interests, could include development of training resources such as written and/or video tutorials, and education and outreach materials.
Interns will be an integral member of the OpenTopography team, working closely with OpenTopography staff at EarthScope, San Diego Supercomputer Center, and Arizona State University. We greatly value the important role our interns play by contributing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to specific projects. Intern-developed functionality and resources are widely used by the OpenTopography community, and have been presented at scientific conferences.

The EarthScope Student Careers Internship Program is open to graduate and upper level undergraduate student in earth sciences, computer science, geography, engineering, or related fields. The OpenTopography internship will be remote and full-time for 11 weeks mid May – early August, 2024. Interns receive a weekly stipend of $800. To be eligible for this program you must have been a student in Fall 2022, currently enrolled as a student, or returning as a student in Fall 2024.
